Windwrap Fairings and Mounts
Windwrap Fairings and Mounts
Windwrap Fairings are known for being durable, functional
and probably the single greatest aerodynamic performance
upgrade that you can make to a bike or trike. Windwrap
fairings offer superior optical clarity, too, even though you
don't really look through them as much as you look over
them. The Windwrap size/shape/mounting selection is superior to
all others, especially for recumbent trikes. A Windwrap will add both speed and
weather protection to your riding.
We make a wide variety of Windwrap fairings and mounts. Some fairings and mounts
are more universal, and fit a lot of different bikes and trikes. Some fairings
and mounts are very specific. Look up your bike or trike on our Windwrap Fit
Chart to see what fairings and mounts are best for you.
There are two basic types of fairings: those that turn with the
handlebars/front wheel, and those that stay fixed. Fairings that turn with the
front wheel have slots in the bottom where they wrap around the wheel and attach
to the fork. Fairings that stay fixed have no wheel arch and instead have a
central mount at the bottom. Generally, fairings that turn only go on LWB bikes
where the cranks are behind the head tube. Everything else uses a fixed fairing.
There several different types of mounts. Some are for fairings that turn, and
some are for fairings that stay fixed. For the fixed fairings, most of the
mounts are offered with a fold forward feature to give you more room while
getting on and off your bike/trike. Most of the fixed fairing mounts attach to
the main tube of the bike, but some attach to the derailleur post or the bottom
bracket.
While we pride ourselves on the optical clarity of our fairings, fairings are
designed to be looked OVER, not THROUGH. Our fairings and mounts are designed to
provide aerodynamic coverage and sightlines over the fairing. Lowracers, some
trikes, etc. have seat to crank height ratios which make it difficult to see
over a fairing. Check our Sightlines page to see how your seat to crank
height ratio will work.
I
have personally had a fairing on my Gold Rush for years and
I consider the bike naked and incomplete without it.
The Fairings
We make 7 basic fairings: The XT, GX, ERX, WERX, RNS,
BLC, and
CAFE. Each has it's own shape, depending on the locations of the front wheel
cranks, and handlebars.
XT: The XT is a small fixed fairing that typically mounts
on the derailleur
post. It works on a lot of different bikes and trikes. Since it is a small
fairing, it doesn't provide as much aero assist as the larger fairings. On
bikes/trikes with low seats and limited forward visibility, it's sometimes the
only fairing that will work. In spite of it's small size, it's great at keeping
your feet warm if you're a cold weather rider.
GX: The GX is a full sized fixed fairing that wraps around from under
the pedals up and over your knees. It's ideal for lots of bikes and
trikes with the cranks out front. Mounts for the GX are either rigid or fold
forward for easier entry/exit.
ERX and
WERX: The ERX and it's wider version the WERX, are turning
fairings made for LWB bikes where the pedals are down fairly low, like the Easy
Racers Tour Easy, Gold Rush, etc. The mounts attach at the fork and handlebars.
The shape and contour of these fairings provide great aerodynamics. Each is
capable of supporting a Body Sock, but we recommend the wider WERX if you'll be
running a sock.
RNS: The RNS
is a turning fairing made for LWB bikes where the pedals aren't down as low, like the Rans
Stratus, Easy Racers Tomahawk, etc. The mounts attach at the fork and
handlebars. This fairing is designed to provide great aerodynamics and
good foot clearance, with the main curve of the bubble shifted up compared to
the ERX type fairings. It is capable of supporting a Body Sock, but you may want
to consider the wider WERX fairing if you'll be running a sock.
BLC: The BLC is designed for high bottom
bracket remote steered bikes. The curve of the bubble provides good aerodynamic coverage and all
the clearances where you need them.
CAFE: The CAFE is designed for bikes where the cranks are just ahead
of the head tube. It provides a nice aero toebox and clearance for the
handlebars to turn. It's also used on MBB bikes like the Cruzbikes.
SPEEDBIKE: This is a special bubble made specifically for
racing/record setting streamliners. If you are building a racing streamliner and
need an aero windshield, email us for specs.
The Lexan brand polycarbonate we use remains flexible for
many, many years,
and while some care is needed to keep the fairing in
good shape, the occasional bike falling over or rubbing
against a harsh wall etc does not render the fairing unusable. Many riders with fairings well over 10
years old consider those marks a badge of experience and adventure. The fairings are easily removed for storage or
travel- 4 thumbscrews and away you go!
Check through the selection of fairings and the many
kinds of mounting hardware to what is best for
your machine.
The Mounts
All Windwrap mounts feature Windwrap exclusive vibration damping rubber
mounts and knurled bolts for easy no tool fairing on/off. Some of the
fairing mounts have a tilt forward option. This allows the fairing to be tilted
forward to make it easier to get on and off your bike/trike. Some bikes will be
fine with the fixed mount option, but others, like tadpole trikes, will be much
easier to get on and off with this feature. Windwrap fairings are well known for
their durability and resistance to cracking. The vibration damping mounts are a
big part of the reason. All fairings and mounts are vibration tested on both a
vibration testing machine and extensive road tests. Windwrap mounts are simple
and solid.
mh_XT/mh_XTRemote: This is the mount for the XT fairing. It usually attaches to
the derailleur post. It can be configured as the mh_XTRemote hardware to provide anglular
adjustment and extend the positional range. This is usually not required,
however.
mh_OnePoint: This is the most common fixed fairing mount. It is used
with the GX fairing on lots of bikes and trikes. It has an upper and a lower
arm. Each mount at the same place on the main frame of the bike/trike, hence the
name "OnePoint". It's very adaptable. You can separate the attachment
of the upper and lower mounts if you wish (an extra set of mounting bands is
used if so). Tilt Forward option recommended for trikes.
mh_Classic2Pt: The "Classic" is used in situations where the
bottom part of the OnePoint can't be used. An arm attaches to the bottom bracket
to support the lower part of the fairing. The upper part of the mount is the
same as the OnePoint mount.
mh_ERX/WERX: These are mounts for turning fairings on LWB bikes like
the Easy Racers. The mh_ERX has handlebar mounts sized for the bar spacing on
the Easy Racers, Sun, and Lightfoot handlebars. The mh_WERX mount is for the
wider WERX fairing. There is a related but different
mount (mh_RNSC/mh_WRNSC) sized for the spacing on the wider Rans chopper bars.
mh_RNST/mh_WRNST: These are the turning mounts for LWB bikes like the Rans
Stratus and Easy Racers Tomahawk with a single large handlebar mast. They are
different from the ERX mounts in that they are designed to attach to a single
handlebar mast instead of chopper type bars with two tubes coming up. The fork
mount tabs are a little different as well. The mh_WRNST mount is for the wider
WERX fairing.
mh_RNSC/mh_WRNSC: These are the turning mounts for the Rans LWB bikes
with wide chopper style bars. They are similar to the ERX mounts but sized for the spacing on the wider Rans chopper bars.
The mh_WRNSC mount is for the wider WERX fairing.
mh_Cafe: This mount uses hardware specific to the bikes that use the
CAFE fairing. It has a BB mount for the lower part of the fairing and an angle
adjustable upper mount that attaches to the derailleur post.
mh_Remote: This is a special mount for remote steered LWB bikes and
Delta trikes. It uses a lower mount that extends up, over, and down from the
main tube.
The Windwrap Fit Chart lists nearly every recumbent bike
and trike ever made.
Scroll down to the manufacturer, then look for your bike/trike. If it's not
listed, email us for information and to let us know we need to add it.
Accessories
Fairing covers help keep your fairing clean and scratch free. We design our
fairings so they are easy to remove and roll up for storage or transport. We
recommend that you remove and roll up your fairing if you are carrying your
bike/trike on the outside of a vehicle. With the quick release mounts, it only
takes a moment. In case there is even a slight bit of dirt on the fairing, we
recommend rolling it up in a large towel or using one of our fairing covers. Our
fairing covers are made from soft fleece material, shaped to protect your
fairing. Ties integrated into the cover let you easily secure the fairing.
REMEMBER FOR A COMPLETE KIT YOU NEED TO PICK THE FAIRING
AND A MOUNTING KIT WHICH CAN DIFFER BY STYLE. IF
