IT Internship:

As a rapidly growing company with expanding logistics, TerraCycle’s IT department is looking for motivated interns looking to gain hands on experience. Candidates will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, covering a broad scope of IT tasks and responsibilities. You'll work with a great degree of independence and your contribution will have a real and practical impact on the great work that TerraCycle does. You'll also have the chance to move between these various projects and roles:

  • Project Management:
  • Often overlooked by traditional IT education, the importance of project and resource management is a vital part of a long term career in technology. At TerraCycle we'll give interns the opportunity to see the "back end" of IT.

  • Testing:
  • Thousands of people visit TerraCycle's websites on a daily basis; returning visitors, potential new users, business partners and media. As the scope of the website continually changes and new functionality is added, it's vital that extensive testing is conducted to ensure that everything is working before it becomes public facing. You'll work on bug reports, work with the Brigades and Customer Service departments to solve identify issues, and provide clear and concise feedback for issue resolution.

  • VOIP Phone System:
  • TerraCycle is a fast growing company with an increasingly global scope. The main office recently replaced its traditional telecommunications environment with an Asterisk based phone system, which now needs to be rolled out to offices world wide.

  • Desktop Support:
  • Everyone's least favorite part of IT. Yet, a good manager can use desktop support to assess user satisfaction, identify problems or define new projects. Every call provides the opportunity to please the user and grow the department.

    Experience and Technical Skills:

    User level systems: Mac OSX, Windows XP/Vista/7, Ubuntu Linux, MS Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird, MS Office, Open Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Skype, Dropbox, Network Printing.

    Administration level software: Ubuntu Linux Server, Postfix, Amavis, Webmin, Samba, Apache, Asterisk, VPN (IPsec and PPtP), MRTG, Network Printing.

    Network systems: Hardware RAID, redundant systems, Commercial grade (240V) UPS, V-LAN, IPsec WAN, Wifi, Captive Portal, RADIUS, VOIP, Multi Homing, Traffic Shaping, QOS, NoSql, Redis, Memcached.

    Scripting and Development: Shell scripts, PERL, Ruby on Rails, CoffeeScript, HTML, CSS (including increasing usage of HTML5 and CSS3), jQuery.

    Open Source: The TerraCycle IT department is very active and supportive of FOSS. Work done on FOSS projects may be returned to the project in your name, or shared credit as applicable.

    Skill and Qualifications:

  • General organization
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies would be beneficial
  • Some understanding of how to use ticketing systems
  • Ability to provide clear, accurate descriptions of problems
  • Can take and send screenshots
  • Great attention to details
  • Nuts and Bolts:

    The internship is located at our graffiti-covered global headquarters in Trenton, NJ. Interns will be asked to bring their own laptop computer to the office, but printing facilities and general office supplies will be provided. The preferred duration of the internship is May to with an expected minimum of 20 hours per week. However, each internship can be customized, and the duration can vary on a case to case basis. Though, students seeking college credit must adhere to their educational institution’s internship requirements.

    Although the internship if unpaid, we provide a bountiful lunch every day, a well-organized education experience with interdepartmental lectures so that you can learn about all aspects of TerraCycle’s operations and business management in general, regular intern events and company parties. In the previous year, TerraCycle had over 100 interns from top colleges, law schools and business schools. It’s a dynamic and highly charged entrepreneurial environment. TerraCycle will offer college credit and recommendations upon successful completion of the internship. Due to the company’s eco-focus, some schools, including Princeton, provide a stipend for their students to work at TerraCycle, so please check with your school if they can provide support.
