Give one baby chicken to a needy family
Your gift can help a family add nourishing, life-sustaining eggs to their otherwise inadequate diets. Protein-packed eggs from even a single chicken can make a life-saving difference, as a healthy hen can lay up to 200 eggs a year.
Chickens require minimal space and can thrive on readily available food scraps, thus allowing families to improve their nutrition and simultaneously make money without having to spend much of their personal finances. Chickens also help control insects and fertilize gardens which further help a family thrive.
It will take 6,000 TerraCycle points to provide a family with a starter flock of between 25 and 50 baby chicks. When you redeem 240 points to provide a baby chick to a needy family, TerraCycle will aggregate your points with those from any of the other 60,000 collection locations across the US that also redeem points for one or more chicks. When another 25 collection locations redeem points to provide a chick to a family, a starter flock will be given to a family through Heifer International. If you would like to give 2 or more chicks to a family, simply adjust the quantity of chicks in the shopping cart or redeem the item additional times and the additional chicks and redeemed points will be presented in your shopping cart.
Heifer International will provide the receiving family with the necessary training on animal welfare in order to maintain the health and longevity of the chickens. An added benefit of the Heifer program is that the chicken’s first offspring will be passed on to another hungry family in the community, along with the necessary training, thereby creating a cycle of sustainability and self-sufficiency in the greater community at large.
