OHPV Human Power Party/Open House 5/26/07

TerraCycle, Stites Design, and the OHPV invite racers, helpers, families, and friends coming to the Human Power Challenge races to an Open House and OHPV Race party Saturday night after the races.

Beer, soft drinks, and munchies provided- come and enjoy the fun, meet new friends, check out the shop, and talk bikes. Envelopes, napkins, and other scraps of paper will be on hand in case anyone has to hatch a new bike...

Time: from 7PM (or whenever the races are over) to 11PM
Location: The TerraCycle/Stites Design/Vanilla Bicycles Shop at

3450 SE Alder in Portland, 503-231-9798 (800-371-5871)

Car, Bike, and Walking/Transit Directions:

The shop is located in SE Portland about 8 miles from Portland International Raceway. Here are 3 levels of map, courtesy of www.mapquest.com,  showing how to get to the shop from the Raceway:

An overview from P.I.R to the shop. Note there are two reasonable car routes, both starting out south on Interstate 5; if you're riding your bike, the best bike route involves taking the new Yellow MAX line- more on that at the bottom of the page. The walking/transit option is described there too.

Anyway, the internal combustion routes- follow the fuzzy pink lines- I know, fuzzy gray lines would have been more appropriate, but they don't show as well:

Closer in, from the all important Freeway exits to Alder Street.

The close in neighborhood. Coming from the west (I5 to Belmont/99E exit) note that there is a Zupan's Market at 33rd and Belmont; a light at 34th and Belmont, and an old Fire Station at 35th and Belmont. Alder is two blocks north of Belmont.

Coming from the north (I84/39th Avenue/Hollywood) there is a Shell Station and a light at Stark Street. Alder is two blocks south of Stark.

The TerraCycle/Stites Design shop is in what used to be a large, low, open dairy barn. It is now a one story gray building that takes up a quarter of the block. There are some popular night spots in the neighborhood, and we recommend you park on Alder east of 34th or on Washington St. one block north. 35th Avenue has limited parking due to the Firehouse on Belmont.

Detailed Instructions

1: Leave P.I.R. and head out to the freeway.

2: Take the I-5 South ramp.

3: Travel South on I-5 3.6 miles past Broadway St. and the Rose Garden Arena.

4: Take the OR-99E exit, exit number 300B, towards US-26 E/OREGON CITY/OMSI.

5: Take the ramp towards OREGON CITY.

5: Keep LEFT at the fork in the ramp. You will come down onto Belmont Street.

6. Proceed East on Belmont to 34th Avenue (there is a light there) and
turn left on 34th.

7. Go north 2 blocks on 34th to Alder St. and turn right.

8. In half a block, you're there!

If you somehow find yourself on I84 eastbound:

4: Don't panic. Go 2.5 miles on I84 to the 39th Ave/Hollywood Exit.

5: Stay in the right lane of the exit and turn right (south) onto 39th Ave.

6: Proceed down 39th Ave, up past the Joan of Arc roundabout at Glisan St
(be in the left lane there!), down the hill past Burnside St., up past Laurelhurst Park, and down to the light at Stark St. You'll see a Shell Station there.

7: Go two blocks past Stark and turn right onto Alder. Proceed down
Alder to 35th. You're there!

MAX/Bike Directions:

1. Exit PIR and go to the MAX station. It's right near the entrance to PIR. Purchase a 2 zone ticket ($1.70).

2. Get on a southbound train and take it to the Interstate/Rose Quarter stop. The ride's about 18 minutes.

3. Multnomah Avenue crosses right at the Interstate/Rose Quarter stop. Head east (away from the river) on Multnomah Avenue.

If you want, you can take a 12 block hop on an eastbound train (a Red or Blue line train that says Airport or Gresham). The Red and Blue lines are one block south of the Yellow line station. If you take the eastbound train, get off at 12th Avenue/Lloyd Center. Multnomah Avenue is across the park, one block north of the 12th Avenue Station.

4. Take Multnomah Avenue east to 27th Avenue. Jog left a block to Wasco, then right one block, and take the bike/pedestrian cut through to 28th Avenue (by the big Fred Meyer store).

5. Go right (south) on 28th to SE Stark Street (there's a light at 28th and Stark).

6. Turn left (east) on Stark and go to 34th.

7. Turn right (south) on 34th, go 2 blocks to Alder. Turn Left on Alder to 35th. There's plenty of bike parking inside!

Estimated biking distance: about 4 miles, including from PIR to the MAX station.

NOTE: The last Yellow MAX train of the night leaves the Interstate/Rose Garden stop at 12:39 AM. Trains run about every 15 minutes (though there's a half hour gap right before the 12:39AM train). If you have any transit questions, check out http://www.trimet.org or call 503-238-RIDE for more information.

No Lights/No Wheels/Transit all the Way:

1. Take the Yellow Max line downtown. Keep your receipt; you'll need it for the bus.

2. Get off at 3rd Avenue and walk north 1 block to Alder Street.

3. Take Bus 15 East (Belmont) back over the river.

4. Get off at SE 34th Avenue.

5. Go north 2 blocks (past Salvadore Molly's Restaurant, the one with the lights in the trees) to Alder.

6. Go right on Alder to 35th. It's party time!

NOTE: The #15/Belmont bus runs about every 15 minutes. On the way back, you'll need to get off the bus at 2nd Avenue (first stop after the river) and catch the Yellow line MAX north 1 block and east 2 blocks (Stark and 1st or thereabouts). The last Yellow Line MAX leaves there about 12:39AM. If you have any transit questions, check out http://www.trimet.org or call 503-238-RIDE for more information.
