The Febreze® Air Freshener Recycling Programme - FAQ

Recycling in partnership with Febreze®

Anyone based in mainland UK or the Isle of Wight can participate in our recycling programmes. Unfortunately people based in the following locations cannot participate at this time: the Hebrides, Isle of Man, Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands, Isles of Scilly, Jersey or Guernsey. This is due to logistical reasons but please be assured the TerraCycle® Operations Team are looking into solutions for us to provide free recycling programmes in these locations in the future. We apologise for any inconvenience.

To participate simply check the public drop-off location map to find your nearest collection point.  

Accepted waste:

  • All brands of air freshener aerosols

Non-accepted waste:

  • Deodorant aerosols
  • Body spray aerosols
  • Cleaning aerosols (such as disinfectants or outdoor cleaning)
  • Suncare aerosols

For this programme a fixed number of points will be allocated per full drum. Unlike our other programmes which establish an average weight, your account will be credited based on 1 full drum. Each full drum returned to TerraCycle will be awarded 800 points. Each TerraCycle point can be redeemed for a payment of £0.01 to the UK based charity or school of your choice. TerraCycle points will be credited on a monthly basis for any drum of aerosols received. 

Due to the type of waste stream being collected, the Environment Agency specifies a metal drum must be used for storage and transportation of aerosol cans. As a member of this programme you would be provided with a metal drum. To ship materials of this kind we will use a specialist logistics company, Biffa, whose requirement is that all shipments are collected and transported in a vented 205L drum. You must send in no more or no less than 1 full metal drum (the drum holds approximately 400 aerosols).

Once the drum is full simply call TerraCycle on 0800 0470 984 and a member of the team will book a collection for you. Collection will be taken care of within a month and you will be informed of the collection's date a few days before the pick up. On collection you will be supplied with a replacement empty drum. Please make sure that the cans are empty before putting them in the drum.

No, our service is completely free! Once you request a collection with TerraCycle, Biffa will come to collect your drum which will bring your aerosol collections back to our facility to be recycled into new products. You win, we win, and the environment wins!

Yes. In the Febreze® Air Freshener Recycling Programme you need to send back a drum within 6 months of registration. If you are inactive for over 6 months during any other time you will be removed to enable someone that is on the waiting list to join the programme.

Please check back frequently to see if your status has been updated. It can take up to 4 weeks for a drum to be credited. If there is a serious problem with collections/donations status please call Customer Support on 0800 0470 984 or e-mail our Customer Support Team.

Yes. You can select or change the charity through the TerraCycle website. Simply log into your account at and click on "MY ACCOUNT". Then select the “MY CHARITIES” tab through your account and select “ADD NEW CHARITY” to fill out all necessary charity information. Please note: Whichever charity you have listed on your account on April 30th and October 31st will be the beneficiary of the funds earned on your account.
