Recycle all crisp packets through this programme
Walkers® offers a simple and free crisp packet recycling scheme, which accepts all brands.
This is now the largest and fastest-growing scheme of its type in the UK, with more than 1,600 public drop-off locations nationwide. In fact, there is a public drop-off location within 4 miles of 80% of UK households – find your local one here.
Please note that from September 9th 2019 onwards:
Please start collecting this amount of packets as soon as possible to be ready for this change.
Participating in the programme is completely free and very simple. There are 2 ways to participate:
1. Drop off your crisp packets at your nearest public drop-off location
Find your nearest public drop-off location on the interactive map above and drop off your crisp packets.
To learn more about public drop-off locations, please click here.
2. Set up a public drop-off location (applies to existing members only)
If you don’t have a public drop-off location nearby, you could set one up somewhere that’s accessible to members of the public, such as a community centre, shop or other public space (please ensure you have permission from whoever administers the site). But because we are always looking to minimise the environmental impact of our schemes, you need to be confident you can collect a minimum of 8kg of crisp packets every six months – that’s around 1,600 packets. This will help reduce the number of trips needed by vans picking up shipments. If you think you can meet this requirement, please apply here.
To learn more about what public drop-off locations are and what it involves to set up one, please click here.
Note: we do not provide collection boxes for this scheme – we would ask that you re-use an old cardboard box.
Once you are a member of the programme and when you are ready to send a shipment, please follow these steps:
Crisp multipack outer packaging is accepted. Please do not fold the crisp packets into triangles. Check out our Accepted Waste Poster below for more details.
Please make sure your packets are completely empty before dropping them off or sending your shipments.
For members of the programmes, also make sure you tape the box together securely, ensuring there are no loose edges or corners. Print your label and attach it to the shipment.
Please do not send in boxes which are larger than 70cm x 60cm x 60cm. In line with the upcoming minimum shipment weight change, shipments sent in by public drop-off locations should weigh a minimum of 8kg and a maximum of 30kg.
Once collected, the crisp packets are separated by plastic type, cleaned, and extruded into plastic pellets to make new recycled products. Click here to learn more about the recycling process.
TerraCycle® points are credited to the account of the private collectors or public drop-off location administrators as a reward for their collection efforts. The number of points given is determined by the total weight of the shipment. 1 TerraCycle® point is worth 1 penny.
Once credited, the points can be redeemed into financial donations to the charity or school chosen by the owner of the points. The points must be redeemed on the TerraCycle® website.
Here is the reward this programme offers:
2 kilograms of crisp packets = 0 TerraCycle® points
5 kilograms of crisp packets = 1000 TerraCycle® points
8 kilograms of crisp packets = 1,600 TerraCycle® points
Please be aware, the weight of the cardboard box is not taken into account. TerraCycle® recommends members of the programme and public drop-off location administrators to send more than the minimum weight to ensure points are awarded.
Walkers is the nation’s favourite crisp brand. Founded in Leicester in 1948, Walkers produces many of the country’s best-loved snacks, including Walkers crisps, Walkers Sensations, Walkers Oven Baked, Quavers, Wotsits and Monster Munch. We’re committed to making all our snacks packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025 – and are working to meet that ambition as fast as we can. In the meantime, we’re collaborating with TerraCycle so that we can recycle used crisp packets and reduce waste.
