Got Hard-to-Recycle Stuff, Like Electronics? Take It to Cook County’s Trash Bash Fair

If there’s a drawback to spring cleaning, it would be the pile of cast-offs that lingers, like a hangover, long after the thrill of decluttering is gone.

What to do with all this stuff — especially the stuff that could be recycled somehow or donated somewhere — without turning its disposal into a full-time job?

Take it to Trash Bash, an annual event hosted by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.

Trash Bash runs from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, at Miller Meadow-South, near Forest Park, and it’s as close as most Chicagoans are likely to get to a one-stop shop for hard-to-recycle items, including electronics.

Participating agencies and nonprofits include the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Habitat for Humanity, Working Bikes, Terracycle and SCARCE. Midway Document Destruction will provide on-site shredding services.

How Many Butts? Estimating Your Cigarette Waste Cleanup Impact

Have you ever wondered just how many cigarette butts you and your fellow cleanup volunteers collect during a beach or park cleanup? It’s easy to pick up a handful of cigarette butts and feel like you’re making a difference—because you are—but wouldn’t it be fun to measure your impact in a big way?

Every butt picked up is one less polluting our ecosystems. So, let’s turn picking up cigarette butts into a challenge. How many can you collect, and how can you estimate the total count in a fun and easy way?

DRBC Hosts "Water & Waste" Roundtable with OSW Partner TerraCycle

DRBC and Our Shared Waters (OSW) Partner TerraCycle recently hosted a "Water & Waste" roundtable at TerraCycle's headquarters in Trenton, N.J. The event offered an opportunity for folks to connect and engage with one another and to share ideas and perspectives on the water-waste connection, as well as on Delaware River Basin water quality and the economic impacts of clean water. Invited guests included Our Shared Waters partners working across sectors to improve and protect the Delaware River Basin's shared water resources, as well as local elected officials.

Before the roundtable began, attendees were treated to a TerraCycle facility tour, including the Dr. Ernel Simpson Research & Development Lab, where TerraCycle materials scientists investigate different materials that make up products like shoes and food wrappers and then develop a process to break down and recycle these products.

In addition to learning about the innovative work that TerraCycle does, participants also had the opportunity to hear from DRBC Sr. Aquatic Biologist Jake Bransky about a recent Commission study on microplastics in the Delaware River Estuary. This study showed that microplastics were found in all samples tested, including blanks, highlighting the pervasiveness of the problem and the need for solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
