n a recent Environmental Transformation Podcast interview TerraCycle Founder and CEO Tom Szaky explains why most items labeled “not recyclable” are limited by economics rather than technology and why TerraCycle is investing heavily in reuse through its Loop platform. He discusses the progress of Loop in scaling reuse, particularly in France, and how moving beyond single-use systems is key to a circular economy. Szaky also touches on broader barriers in recycling infrastructure, the role of extended producer responsibility policy, and the importance of making sustainability accessible and engaging for consumers.

As plastic waste continues to grow in 2026, meaningful progress depends on reducing unnecessary single use packaging, expanding reuse, and improving recycling systems for materials that are difficult to manage. The article highlights the need for practical solutions that keep plastics in use longer, supported by better infrastructure and producer responsibility. TerraCycle has opened a large new operations center in Aurora, Illinois, transforming the historic former Henry Pratt factory into a hub for sorting and distributing hard‑to‑recycle materials. The 100,000 square foot facility processes hard‑to‑recycle items such as snack wrappers, coffee pods, beauty packaging and cigarette butts collected through TerraCycle programs and Zero Waste Boxes. This expansion strengthens TerraCycle’s capacity to keep challenging waste streams in use and out of landfills while supporting growth across North America.
