Since this program is currently in a pilot phase, a TerraCycle representative must review your information to determine whether you qualify to participate. In most instances, you or your organization will be approved within one or two business days. However, in some circumstances you may receive a quick email from a TerraCycle representative to verify your intention to recycle rigid beach plastics.

When you are approved for the program, you will receive an automated message from our website. The program will also automatically appear in your list of collection programs on your account profile and you will be able to download UPS labels from the program page.

Approximately 1 – 2 weeks after you have been approved, you will also receive a more thorough Welcome Letter introducing you to the program.

All rigid beach plastics will be accepted through this program. Rigid "beach" plastics are any rigid plastics found along a shoreline (i.e. rivers, beaches, bays, lakes).

Please do your best to sort out organic matter and pieces of waste that are clearly not rigid plastics. While we ask that items be reasonably clean and dry, we do not require extensive cleaning and a small amount of residual organic matter is acceptable.

Soft or flexible plastics like nylon rope, fishing nets, and plastic bags are not accepted through this program at this time.

Also, UPS will not ship dripping packages, so all waste must be completely dry and/or placed into a plastic bag prior to shipping.

No, TerraCycle points are not awarded for this program.

After you have been approved to participate in the program, you may send us your rigid beach plastic through a freight pickup.

All shipments must be sent through freight shipments. To coordinate a freight shipment for your rigid beach plastics, please reach out to beachplastics@terracycle.com. We will supply you with bulk bags (for storing and shipping) as well as promotional support to encourage others to recycle with you.

We welcome anyone from almost any any household, school, or organization to join in our recycling efforts! There are some practical considerations to keep in mind, however. For example, our programs are not designed to accommodate recycling centers.

TerraCycle free recycling programs are open to all U.S. States EXCEPT for Alaska and Hawaii. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, your account will be automatically deactivated and your location will not be able to print or request labels. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have free recycling programs running in those states and territories in the future.

If you live in another country, please visit the TerraCycle World Map to see if you can recycle with TerraCycle in your country.

You will need to provide:

  1. A contact person to oversee the recycling programs at your location
  2. A valid email address

That’s it!

Please note: When you sign up for TerraCycle you need to complete one more step before you can start recycling. You have to join at least one of our Free Recycling Programs. When you join a program you can begin recycling that waste stream and earning any applicable rewards.

TerraCycle runs completely free recycling solutions that are made possible by our brand partners. For a complete list of our free recycling programs, click here.

TerraCycle products are made either by upcycling or recycling the collected waste.

Upcycling is defined as using or valuing every aspect of waste in order to give it a new useful life.

Recycling is defined as extracting materials from one product and using them to make an entirely new product.
