Material Sales Manager

This is an important role that will require the ongoing sale or movement of collected waste streams into downstream recycling applications. 

About Us:

TerraCycle is the world leader in the collection and recycling of post-consumer “non-recyclable” waste.  In 21 countries around the world, we collect billions of pieces of waste, mostly made up of plastic packaging that is otherwise destined for landfill or incineration.  By collecting coherent waste streams separated by category (millions of chip bags, millions of drink pouches, millions of toothbrushes, etc.), we are able to use subcontractors to recycle these waste streams into a new format that can be used by third party manufacturers.  These manufacturers provide the specifications they need for the recycled plastics to be used in their products, and we provide them with a workable raw material.

Our collection business is funded by the major consumer brands of the world (Kraft Foods, Colgate-Palmolive, L’Oreal, PepsiCo, etc.), which pay us to operate these post-consumer collection programs.  These programs render their previously non-recyclable packaging or products nationally recyclable.  TerraCycle also works with the manufacturing facilities and packaging suppliers for these large brands to recycle their pre-consumer waste.  This results in the collection of millions of pounds of “clean” industrial waste that TerraCycle can process and sell into one of its many product applications. 

This job is based out of TerraCycle’s global headquarters in Trenton, NJ.  The “Material Sales Manager,” on the Material Solutions team, reports to the Global Vice President of Material Sales & Procurement.  The team works closely with TerraCycle’s R&D team to develop recycling solutions for the wide range of waste we collect – including but not limited to chip bags, juice pouches, diapers, and chewing gum.  This is an important role that will require the ongoing sale or movement of collected waste streams into downstream recycling applications.  Part of this role involves managing the conversion of material into a new format before sale, while other parts of this role require basic brokering of materials on an “as is” basis to a suitable end user.   In some cases, the role will require basic vendor and customer management so that the company’s needs are being communicated and met on a regular basis.  TerraCycle’s unique business model and the fact that we work with various No. 7-type plastics, this job will require learning about the atypical, non-commodity grade materials that we collect and teaching our prospective clients about them as we go. 

The successful candidate should be an excellent salesperson with outstanding communication and negotiation skills.  He or she must possess documented sales experience, preferably with some knowledge of polymers and the types of applications that they can go into.  Any vendor management or project management experience will be considered a plus.   While training will be provided, this role will call for a proactive person who is willing to learn and adapt to a fast-paced, high-volume work environment. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify and on-board customers and downstream recycling applications for the materials that TerraCycle collects.  This can be after materials are converted to a new format, or on an “as is” basis.
  • Identify and manage processing facilities that possess the equipment necessary to convert TerraCycle’s raw material supply into a usable recycled plastic (sorting equipment, shredding equipment, wash/dry equipment, extruders to produce pellet, etc.) as required by some downstream outlets. 
  • Develop and maintain a sales pipeline consisting of traditional sales of items that are already in our possession, items that we may be able to source from an outside vendor to meet a customer’s needs, etc.
  • Develop and manage closed-loop recycling programs for vendors and customers who want to use their own recycled material back in their supply chain.
  • Work closely with Operations Team and Warehouse Staff to keep warehouse items consolidated together with “like” materials so that they can be moved downstream more easily.
  • Communicate with internal teams to update them on the progress of the material solutions related to their brand accounts.
  • Minimal travel (approximately 2-3 days per month) in the continental USA to prospect and execute sales.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Firm understanding of plastics/polymers and the applications that they can go into.
  • Minimum 2 years of sales experience, preferably in the plastic, waste management, or recycling sector.  Vendor management and/or project management experience is a plus. 
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite; Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word in particular.
  • Top-notch organization skills, with strong e-mail and file management. 
  • Ability to drive and travel on occasion.
