Material Sourcing & Project Manager

This is an important role that will require identifying waste streams that TerraCycle can source to serve the needs of various production cycles and downstream customers.  

About Us:

TerraCycle is the world leader in the collection and recycling of post-consumer “non-recyclable” waste.  In 21 countries around the world, we collect billions of pieces of waste, mostly made up of plastic packaging that is otherwise destined for landfill or incineration.  By collecting coherent waste streams separated by category (millions of chip bags, millions of drink pouches, millions of toothbrushes, etc.), we are able to use subcontractors to recycle these waste streams into a new format that can be used by third party manufacturers.  These manufacturers provide the specifications they need for the recycled plastics to be used in their products, and we provide them with a workable raw material.

Our collection business is funded by the major consumer brands of the world (Kraft Foods, Colgate-Palmolive, L’Oreal, PepsiCo, etc.), which pay us to operate these post-consumer collection programs.  These programs render their previously non-recyclable packaging or products nationally recyclable.  TerraCycle also works with the manufacturing facilities and packaging suppliers for these large brands to recycle their pre-consumer waste.  This results in the collection of millions of pounds of “clean” industrial waste that TerraCycle can process and sell into one of its many product applications. 

This job is based out of TerraCycle’s global headquarters in Trenton, NJ.   The “Material Sourcing & Project Manager,” on the Material Solutions team, reports to the Global Vice President of Material Sales & Procurement.  The team works closely with TerraCycle’s R&D team to develop recycling solutions for the wide range of waste we collect – including but not limited to chip bags, juice pouches, diapers, and chewing gum.  This is an important role that will require identifying waste streams that TerraCycle can source to serve the needs of various production cycles and downstream customers.  In addition, the role requires hands-on project management and load tracking to ensure that daily shipping activity is captured and reported.  In some cases, the role will require basic vendor management so that the company’s needs are being communicated and met on a regular basis.  Due to TerraCycle’s unique business model and the fact that we work with various No. 7-type plastics, this job will require learning about the atypical, non-commodity grade materials that we collect and teaching our prospective clients about them as we go. 

The successful candidate should be an excellent project manager with outstanding communication and negotiation skills.  He or she must possess a proven track record of project and/or vendor management experience, with the ability to work autonomously.  While training will be provided, this role will call for a proactive person who is willing to learn and adapt to a fast-paced, high-volume work environment.    

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify materials that TerraCycle can acquire to serve its own production needs and/or downstream customer needs.
  • Work closely with the Global VP of Material Sales & Procurement to understand short-term and long-term department goals.
  • Build and maintain a material sourcing pipeline to meet the department goals.
  • Negotiate with, and manage third party vendors according to the needs of the department.
  • Utilize vendor management experience to bring new processing partners and/or downstream users on board on a trial basis. 
  • Track and report applicable data on a load by load basis, as required for each project. 
  • Work closely with TerraCycle’s Operations Department to confirm accuracy of applicable data before sharing key reports (internal or external).
  • Minimal travel (approximately 1-2 days per month) in the continental USA, as required for certain projects.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.   
  • Basic understanding of plastics/polymers.
  • Minimum 2 years of vendor management and/or project management experience.  Sales experience is a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite; Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word in particular.
  • Top-notch organization skills, with strong e-mail and file management.
  • Ability to drive and travel on occasion.
