Product Scientist - Associate

This Associate Product Scientist role will test and design sustainable packaging and products for an exciting new TerraCycle venture. 

About Us:

TerraCycle is the world leader in collecting and recycling waste that is traditionally considered non-recyclable. In conjunction with several of the largest and most prominent consumer products companies in the world, TerraCycle is now advancing an international initiative on the future of packaging, toward the end of disposable packaging.  The “service” is to be launched in early 2019 initially in both Europe and the US.  We are currently hiring for the initial staff for full-time work at our New Jersey headquarters. 

The Associate Product Scientist will report to the Director of Process and Product Development on the R&D Team, with oversight from the Global VP of R&D and other senior TerraCycle staff. A successful candidate should be highly organized with excellent written and oral communication skills.  We are looking for a candidate with a background in Material Science, Packaging Science or a related field who has familiarity with product design, product testing, and vendor management. This role has job functions split between laboratory testing and project management.

Job Objectives:

  • Enthusiastically test and solve various material and design challenges
  • Effectively find, source, and manage vendor partners and product suppliers
  • Maintain inventory system for experiments and database of product designs
  • Perform properties and materials testing on materials
  • Manage assigned projects and maintain tracking information
  • Communicate project updates and scientific developments to critical staff and accounts
  • This position reports in to the Process Engineering Manager, with oversight from the Global Vice President of R&D and other TerraCycle staff
  • Perform all other related tasks and assignments


  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Packaging Science, or a related Engineering field
  • Must have very strong organizational skills
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication/presentation skills
  • Must be capable of handling and prioritizing multiple projects/tasks at the same time
  • Laboratory experience is a plus
  • Life Cycle Assessment experience is a plus
  • Product design experience is a plus
  • Vendor management experience is a plus
  • Product cooling and Cold Chain management is a plus
  • Product washing and sanitization experience is a plus
  • Quality Control experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of Recycling is a plus (material recycling codes, material properties, etc.)
