Clean Up Peterborough, a grassroots volunteer group founded by Steve Paul, has launched a county-wide challenge to collect 50,000 used writing instruments for recycling.
The county-wide challenge follows a Earth Month drive the group held in the City of Peterborough that collected 1,010 unwanted writing instruments to keep them out of landfills.
Since joining the TerraCycle program last October, Clean Up Peterborough has already diverted 1,476 pens, markers, highlighters, and mechanical pencils from the landfill — and is now “raising the stakes with a bold new goal” of collecting 50,000 of the writing instruments for TerraCycle.

A Kraft Heinz coffee recycling program is now accepting compostable coffee pods and disposable coffee bags from Maxwell House, Nabob, and Ethical Bean brands through a free recycling program.
More than 70 per cent of Canadians start their day with a coffee, according to the Coffee Association of Canada. Between coffee pods and coffee bags, that’s a lot of waste potentially sent to landfill.
In a news release, TerraCycle notes flexible coffee bags are designed with multi-layered materials to preserve freshness. But this design makes them incompatible with most curbside recycling programs.

This Earth Month, TerraCycle is underscoring the practical and scalable recycling solutions it has built through decades of innovation to address what traditional recycling leaves behind. From households to industries, TerraCycle is helping close critical gaps in how we keep hard-to-recycle waste out of landfills and incinerators. From free recycling programs for consumers to industry-specific solutions for businesses, TerraCycle is making it easier for people to take action—no matter where they are in their sustainability journey.
