These Hamilton Grade 3s are helping turn Halloween trash into ‘something else’

A Hamilton Grade 3 class is helping make Halloween — and their school — a little greener.

Students at Frank Panabaker Elementary School in Ancaster are asking their peers to save their Snickers, M&Ms and Skittles and other wrappers and bring them to school until Dec. 1, after which they’ll be sent to be recycled.

Go green this Halloween with the help of TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Boxes

While “spooky season” brings great fun, Halloween traditions generate a frightening amount of plastic waste each year. According to industry data, Canadians purchase nearly 230 million kilograms of chocolate candy alone for Halloween. But when the parties are over and trick or treating is done, pesky piles of candy wrappers can be found at curbs all over the neighborhood – and all across the country.

To avoid being haunted by the remnants of these bite-sized, individually-wrapped treats, TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Boxes provide a convenient recycling solution for all brands of flexible plastic-based candy packaging and wrappers, which are not recyclable through conventional recycling facilities.

Kitchener neighbourhood association creates recycling hub

A Kitchener neighbourhood association is putting the focus on sustainability by collecting hard-to-recycle items through its own recycling hub.

The Eastwood Neighbourhood Association launched the program this year with blue bins placed at the entrance of Rockway Community Centre. The bins collect items that would normally end up in the waste centre—oral hygiene products, disposable razors, Swiffer refills, and batteries. The box is then shipped off by courier to a private recycling company, TerraCycle.
