Women's Refuge New Zealand

Women’s Refuge is New Zealand’s largest nation-wide organisation that supports and helps women and children experiencing family violence.

We provide a wide range of services and programmes delivered by both paid staff and a large network of trained volunteers to ensure that families can live happy violence-free lives.

As well as advocacy and practical support to individuals and their families, we also run training programmes for communities and organisations to help educate people on not only how to prevent domestic violence but how to assist those who are impacted.

Last year, just under 60,000 women and children were referred to our services; we answered 132 crisis line calls every day; and 71,202 nights of safe accommodation were provided in our safe houses.

In recent years we have focused on generating significant research that has not been undertaken in New Zealand previously to understand the nature of family violence, disseminate this information to the public, understand the lived realities of those experiencing it and to inform our services to ensure we are embracing best practices and offering effective assistance.

Our vision is for all women and children in New Zealand to live free from domestic and family violence.
