Schwarzkopf Cares Hair Care & Colour Recycling Programme - Private Collectors

Join this programme to collect at home and recycle as a private location or an individual.

Give your used hair care & colour packaging a second life with Schwarzkopf® and TerraCycle

TerraCycle and Schwarzkopf have partnered to create a recycling programme for any brand of used hair care & colour packaging! Join this programme as a private collector to ship your waste directly to TerraCycle for free.

Alternatively, if you would like to be listed as a Community Collection Hub and collect for the public, you can head to this page to join.

This programme has strict shipping guidelines due to the transportation of hair dye. Please read through this check list before shipping your waste.

  1. Remove excess hair dye - Excess hair dye must be emptied and disposed of in your general waste bin.
  2. Triple rinse containers - All hair dye bottles and tubs (both liquid and powder) must be triple rinsed.
  3. Empty tubes - All hair dye tubes must have residual dye squeezed out.

How it works

If you are unable to become a Community Collection Hub and be listed on our map as a public location, you can still send us your used hair care & colour packaging as a private location! You can collect on your own or with your friends & family, school or workplace. This option enables you to collect with a group of people without being listed on our Community Collection Hub map.

To sign up as a private collector please follow these steps:

  1. Join the programme by clicking the button at the top of this page.

  2. When you've collected a couple of months' worth of packaging and are ready to ship your waste to us, head to your profile to download a free shipping label for this program.

  3. Affix your shipping label to your package and bring it to your closest New Zealand Post.

Want to become a Community Collection Hub?

Be featured on the TerraCycle map so individuals in your community can find your location to drop off their waste. Head here to join as a Community Collection Hub.

What you can recycle in this programme

Programme accepted waste: Any brand of used hair care & colour packaging, including:

  • All brands of hair care jars, lids, bottles, closures, tubes pumps and caps made from plastics and flexible or rigid aluminium.
  • All brands of hair colour jars, lids, bottles, closures, tubes, pumps, stirrers and caps made from plastics and flexible or rigid aluminium.
  • All brands of gloves made from latex, HDPE, Nitrile, PE

Please note: If you are also a Community Collection Hub for hair aerosol packaging we reccomend setting up separate collection boxes for each type of waste. Each waste stream needs to be packed in a separate box with a shipping label from the correct recycling programme due to strict shipping requirements for aerosols.

What happens to the waste

Once collected, the hair care & colour packaging is broken down and separated by material. Plastics are cleaned and pelletised to be recycled into new products, and metal materials are sent for smelting and conversion to new alloys. Click here for more information about our recycling process.

TerraCycle Points

For each kilogram of used hair care & colour packaging that you send to TerraCycle, you will receive $1 in TerraCycle Points, which can be redeemed for a payment to the non-profit organisation or school of your choice.

There is no minimum shipment weight required to earn points, although we encourage collectors to collect a few months of waste with your friends and family before sending in a parcel!
